Emerald Archery Club finds its mark at titles

THE fledgling Emerald Archery Club has shot for the stars and found its mark, bringing home a staggering 14 medals from the field archery national titles.

Club coach David Brewer competed in the Men's Bowhunter UnLimitedA-grade and took home a silver medal in the 3D round to go with fourth place in the paper round.

"It was the highest division of the lot," Brewer said.

"There were members of the world championship team there.

"There's a lot of pressure there, and a lot of competition."

Brewer was pleased to perform so strongly in a field of about 30 competitors.

"My goal was to go top three in both (rounds)," he said.

"To do well in both styles was very good."

But he said the most impressive performances of the tournament came from the club's junior members.

Although he has been shooting just five months, 12-year-old Zac Donachyclaimed the gold medal in the Cub Boys Bowhunter Compound C-grade 3D round.

Donachy's mother, Tammy, said he was ecstatic to win gold.

"He was completely amazed," Tammy said.

"He was just beside himself."

Tammy said Donachy's performance was far beyond what they had hoped he would achieve.

"He's only very, very new to the sport," she said.

"We were just expecting him to have a good time.

"We didn't expect it at all.

"It was a huge surprise - not that we didn't have faith in his talent.

"We are just so proud."

She said Donachy had displayed immediate skill in archery.

"He's taken to it very well," she said.

"He's really enjoying it.

"He's just obviously got an eye for that sort of thing."

Tammy said Donachy would improve even more with more experience in the sport.

"I just think that he can only really go up from here," she said.

"He will go up a grade next year.

"With more he can only get better."
